Her excellent grades have earned her many academic awards, including the Highest GPA in AP Calculus and AP Chemistry. “I work very hard to study and yet participate in extracurricular activities in my community. I am proud that I have been blessed with parents who support me in my academic pursuits. I have been able to accomplish many awards and certificates of excellence due to this support,” Laila adds.

Laila is currently working on college acceptance. She plans to pursue her dream job of being a cardiothoracic surgeon. “One day, I wish to be able to save lives and perform heart transplants,” Laila says.

Laila’s motivation stems from the support of others, saying, “I really appreciate the fact that I have been able to have mentorship in my community. They say that there is usually one person who has impacted your life. This person has been my AP Calculus teacher, Rhonda Johnson. She has made me want to push through difficult math problems by understanding the mechanics and theories. I have learned from her that math is similar to everyday life experiences. Somedays, we have difficult decisions to make, but if we take it one step at a time, understanding the mechanics of our choices, we can solve the problem and be successful.”
