A Lifetime of Service: Winford Dunn Reflects on Nearly Six Decades in Law

For nearly six decades, Winford Dunn has practiced law with a simple philosophy: help people, treat them fairly and always do what is right.

Beginning his legal career in 1967, Dunn has spent almost 60 years serving clients and communities throughout Texas and Arkansas. Over the course of his remarkable career, he has witnessed sweeping changes in the legal profession, the judicial system and society itself. Through it all, his commitment to the practice of law—and to the people he represents—has remained constant.

“I just wanted to help people,” Dunn says of what inspired him to pursue law. That desire to serve has guided his career from the beginning.

Looking back, one of the most rewarding aspects of Dunn’s career has been discovering just how much a lawyer can accomplish on behalf of others. He has had the opportunity to represent people from all walks of life and to participate in a judicial system that has itself evolved over the decades. He has witnessed—and in some cases been part of—changes involving women’s rights, racial equality, civil rights and other important issues that helped shape the communities of today.

For Dunn, being a lawyer has never simply meant practicing inside a courtroom. It has meant being part of a system capable of creating meaningful change. His career has included general practices, including civil matters involving monetary damages as well as criminal cases. Over the years, that broad experience has allowed him to understand the law from many different perspectives.

One of the greatest lessons Dunn has learned throughout his career is the importance of the judicial system as a place where every person should have an equal opportunity to seek justice. Regardless of someone’s wealth, position or prominence, Dunn believes the courthouse should provide a level playing field. Through the judicial system and with the assistance of an attorney, individuals have the same rights and opportunities to present their cases.

He has seen that principle demonstrated throughout his career while representing people from many different backgrounds. He credits attorneys, judges and juries with helping ensure that the judicial process works toward finding the truth and reaching the proper outcome. That belief is particularly meaningful in Texarkana, a community unlike many others in the country.

Texarkana’s location on the Texas-Arkansas state line gives local attorneys a unique professional perspective. Lawyers in the area may work within both state systems as well as federal courts, gaining exposure to different laws, procedures and legal environments.

For Dunn, that has been one of the advantages of practicing in the area. It grants access to both state and federal courts and has provided opportunities to learn, grow and work alongside legal professionals on both sides of the state line. He is proud of the legal community that has developed in Texarkana and believes the area’s attorneys compare favorably with lawyers anywhere in the country.

Becoming an exceptional attorney starts with wanting to help people. “You have to WANT to help,” he says. That desire must be accompanied by honesty, hard work, confidence and respect. An attorney must be honest with not only the clients, but the judges, opposing counsel and the court. Respect for everyone involved in the legal process, he believes, is essential to becoming the best lawyer possible.

Confidence is also something that must be earned. “You have to work on it to be confident,” Dunn explains. The legal profession requires preparation, knowledge and persistence. There are victories, but there are also defeats, and attorneys must learn how to get back up and continue moving forward.

His advice to attorneys just beginning their careers is remarkably similar to the advice he would give someone who has been practicing for decades: be honest, work hard and remain professional. He emphasizes that success in law does not come without effort. Attorneys must put in the time, learn the profession and continually improve their skills.

Perhaps one of the most remarkable aspects of Dunn’s career has been the opportunity to witness major changes in American society from the perspective of the legal profession. He remembers a time when women faced restrictions that prevented them from owning property in the same way they can today. He witnessed the continuing evolution of civil rights following landmark events such as the Little Rock crisis and the passage of major civil rights legislation.

He believes attorneys have an important responsibility to participate in the changes taking place around them and to ensure that the rights of individuals are protected. One particularly significant professional experience involved the tobacco litigation. Dunn describes the responsibility associated with those cases and the health issues involved as a tremendous challenge—and an honor. He was proud that Texarkana was selected to be involved in such significant litigation and believes the community’s federal court system demonstrated its ability to handle important and complex cases.

For Dunn, practicing law and serving the community have always gone hand in hand. He believes attorneys have a responsibility to be involved in the communities where they live and work. Community involvement, he says, helps uplift the importance of the community and demonstrates a willingness to contribute to its future. His advice to residents is just as direct: be involved and stay involved. Learn about the community. Pay attention to what is happening. Support positive progress rather than holding the community back. Take pride in Texarkana and help support efforts that will strengthen the area for future generations.

He also believes supporting local government officials and initiatives that help the community grow—including efforts involving education and the university—is important to Texarkana’s future.

Being recognized as a distinguished lawyer is an honor Dunn does not take lightly. “I am very honored to do it,” he says.

At the same time, he is quick to recognize the accomplishments of his colleagues. He believes there are many other lawyers who are equally deserving of recognition and takes great pride in the strength of the local legal community. Be believes the distinction is ultimately about recognizing a career built on doing the right thing.

After nearly 60 years in the legal profession, Dunn’s focus remains on the future. He hopes his influence will continue through the next generation of lawyers by encouraging them to maintain the values that have guided him throughout his career—particularly honesty, hard work, professionalism and a genuine desire to help others.

He admires those same qualities in young attorneys today. Experience may change, technology may change and the practice of law may continue to evolve, but he believes the fundamentals remain the same.

When Dunn considers the legacy he hopes to leave behind, it is not simply about the number of cases he handled or the years he spent in court. It is about the people he helped and the community he served. He hopes to continue building upon his reputation throughout Texas and Arkansas while remaining an active part of the community he calls home. “The legal profession is the best opportunity I have ever had.”

It has been an opportunity to help his clients, serve his hometown, contribute to his community and build a successful life alongside his family. It has also given him a front-row seat to some of the most significant changes in the legal and social history of the region.

His story is ultimately one of perseverance, service and commitment—a reminder that a successful legal career is about more than practicing law. It is about using that profession as an opportunity to make a difference.

And for Winford Dunn, after almost 60 years, that opportunity continues to be an honor.
