Detective Jeremy Poole’s Commitment to Justice Never Wavers

For Detective Jeremy Poole of the Miller County Sheriff’s Office, law enforcement was never simply a career choice. It was a calling that began long before he ever wore a badge. “It has always been a dream of mine since I was a little boy,” Poole says.

That childhood dream has grown into a career spanning nearly two decades, one marked by perseverance, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to serving the people of Miller County. Today, Poole serves as a detective, a role that allows him to combine years of experience, investigative instincts, and dedication to victims seeking answers.

His journey into law enforcement began in 2006 while serving overseas as a Military Police Officer in the United States Army. During his deployment, he worked alongside the Army’s Criminal Investigation Division, assisting with numerous investigations. The experience provided an early glimpse into the world of criminal investigations and planted the seeds for the detective work he would eventually pursue.

After returning home in 2007, Poole entered civilian law enforcement. He spent the next 15 years working patrol, gaining valuable experience and building relationships throughout the community before transitioning into his current role as a detective. Those years on patrol taught him lessons that continue to guide him today. “As a detective, you have to be able to think outside the box,” Poole says. “You also have to understand the victim’s perspective and be able to communicate the next steps.” Those qualities have become central to the way he approaches every investigation.

A typical day for Poole begins at 8 a.m. as he reviews reports and evaluates newly assigned cases. From there, the work can take many different directions. Some days involve tracking down suspects, preparing affidavits, obtaining warrants, and conducting interviews. Other days require extensive research, collaboration with prosecutors, or the management of responsibilities related to the county’s sex offender registry.

While no two days are exactly alike, every case shares a common goal. “I think the aspect I find most rewarding is when I figure out who the suspect is in a situation and can get them brought to court so the victim can get the justice they deserve,” Poole says. That pursuit of justice reached a defining moment in his career last year. In October, Poole was assigned a cold case murder investigation that had remained unsolved for approximately 34 years, and decades had passed without answers. Family members had spent years waiting for closure, wondering if they would ever see justice served.

Many investigators might view a case that old as an uphill battle. Poole saw an opportunity. He carefully reviewed the evidence, examined the available information, and began piecing together details that had remained unresolved for more than three decades.

The work paid off. “I was able to sit down with everything and determine what happened, get warrants issued and served, and have the suspect in jail awaiting trial,” Poole says. Not surprisingly, solving that cold case stands as the proudest moment of his law enforcement career.

Law enforcement has changed dramatically since Poole first entered the profession. Technology has transformed the way agencies communicate, share information, and conduct investigations. “We have more access to computers and other electronic devices that assist us in doing our job,” Poole says. “Being able to communicate with other agencies with ease has also been beneficial.” Despite advances in technology, some aspects of police work remain unchanged. Human relationships remain one of the most powerful tools available to investigators.

Community trust, Poole says, is essential.

“It is very important for the community to trust us and to have their cooperation,” he says. “A large portion of what we achieve comes from the community helping us and trusting us.” Many cases are solved because someone was willing to speak up, share information, or provide a crucial detail. Community members often become an important link in the investigative process.

Poole believes that partnership between citizens and law enforcement is one of the keys to building safer communities. “I always start off being polite and try to treat each contact the way I would want someone to treat my family member in that same situation,” he says. That philosophy reflects a deeper understanding of the challenges people face when interacting with law enforcement. Many individuals encounter officers during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. Victims are often frightened, overwhelmed, or uncertain about what comes next. Poole believes empathy and kindness are critical in those moments.

His advice for anyone considering a career in law enforcement centers on remembering the human side of the profession. “When someone has been a victim of a crime, that may be the biggest thing in their life that has happened,” Poole says. “You are probably meeting the person on the worst day of their life, so remember to be kind.”

Compassion remains especially important given the misconceptions that sometimes surround law enforcement. “The public is under the impression we can solve every crime and fix every situation that arises,” he says. “At the end of the day, we are also humans and have families to go home to just like they do.” That reminder speaks to the reality behind the badge. Officers and detectives carry tremendous responsibility, yet they remain ordinary people dedicated to doing an extraordinary job.

The emotional weight of investigations can be significant, particularly when dealing with serious crimes and difficult circumstances. Poole has learned the importance of maintaining balance. “Taking time for myself to clear my head has been the most important thing for me to do in order to keep myself balanced,” he says. When he is off duty, Poole enjoys relaxing at home, playing video games, practicing guitar, and occasionally taking spontaneous road trips. Those simple activities provide an opportunity to recharge before returning to the demands of detective work.

As technology evolves and investigative methods advance, Poole remains focused on a principle that transcends every aspect of law enforcement: service to the community. While many people are familiar with the phrase “To Protect and Serve,” Poole prefers a different motto. “I prefer to use the phrase ‘Dedicated to Duty, Devoted to Community,’” he says. Those words capture the heart of his mission.

Whether he is reviewing evidence, interviewing suspects, helping victims navigate difficult circumstances, or solving decades-old cases, Poole approaches his work with a clear purpose. Justice matters. People matter. Community matters.

For the citizens of Miller County, his message is straightforward. “We are here to help, not harm,” Poole says. “When we work together as a whole, we can better the community of Miller County.” 

In a profession often measured by arrests, reports, and case numbers, Detective Jeremy Poole’s career demonstrates that some of the most meaningful successes cannot be found on paper. They are found in families receiving long-awaited answers, victims finding justice, and communities growing stronger through trust and partnership.

For Poole, that is what being devoted to the community is all about.
