Nominations Still Open for Texarkana Historic Preservation Awards

Texarkana, USA – Texarkana’s history is rich, diverse, and full of unique stories. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of our fellow citizens, that history is still being maintained. Do you know someone who is dedicated to sharing and preserving Texarkana’s past?  Honor them at the Texarkana Historic Preservation and Awareness Awards! Nominations are open through May 15 and forms are available at TexarkanaMuseums.org/Awards. Awards will be presented in ten categories beginning at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 28 at the P. J. Ahern Home. For more information, please call 903-793-4831 or visit TexarkanaMuseums.org/Events.

“There are so many individual people in our community who have dedicated themselves to keeping Texarkana’s history alive,” says Velvet Hall Cool, TMS Board President. “TMS started the awards as a way to recognize the amazing effort these individuals and organizations have put forth on behalf of the community.”

The public is welcome to nominate any individual or organization in the appropriate category. These categories include: Young Historian, Collegiate Excellence, Multi-cultural Excellence, Social Butterfly, Power of the Pen, Broadcast Media, Historic Site, Endangered Treasure, Historic Collections, and the Wilbur Smith Archivist Award. Details about each category can be found on the Texarkana Museums System Facebook page under Events. Nominations can be made at TexarkanaMuseums.org/Awards. The deadline for nominations is May 15, 2022.

“The categories represent the diverse ways our fellow citizens use to preserve our heritage,” added Cool. “Some have restored a historic building; others have written articles or shared vintage photographs via social media. Some have taken the time to record oral histories with the elders of our community. It all accomplishes the same goal: keeping our history alive for the next generation.”
